For over 40 years, Langley Senior Resources Society (LSRS) has delivered much-needed community outreach services to older adults in Langley. Through the course of this work, we are meeting seniors who are clearly experiencing substantial hardships. This may include housing issues, health care needs, food insecurities, and transportation challenges.
Many seniors live on a fixed or limited income and may face difficulties when an unanticipated expense occurs. In some cases, a senior may need immediate short-term support to help them manage in the moment. We have witnessed many occasions where a vulnerable senior cannot afford to meet an urgent need which then puts their physical and mental well-being at risk.
The LSRS Langley Seniors in Need Fund is a donor-based fund that provides limited short-term financial aid to older adults to assist them with unexpected and sudden costs. This includes:
- housing supports such as housekeeping, handyman tasks, and moving assistance,
- health care needs such as mobility aids, medication costs,
- food insecurity supports such as grocery gifts cards and farmer’s market coupons and, flexible and appropriate transportation supports.
Vulnerable seniors turn to the Langley Senior Resources Society for assistance with a variety of needs. Often, they have no close family that could help them with their housekeeping or perhaps they need their refrigerator cleaned and restocked because they have spent the last 6 weeks in hospital. We often hear from seniors who have suffered a health emergency and can’t afford the walker they need to remain mobile. Perhaps they are struggling because their pension cheque has been delayed and they can’t afford food or need a Handy-Dart pass because they need to get to medical appointments and no longer drive. These are just some of the examples we hear on a regular basis, and we are committed to supporting these seniors in their time of need.
